Tennyson team didn't need luxuries to win
"Gymless wonders" ruled the courts
Ask a member of Tennyson's "gymless wonders" about the old days, and you won't hear tales of luxury.
The team got its nickname from Tennyson School, which did not have a gymnasium at the time they played. Team members practiced on a cinder court outside the school building. "For a long time we never practiced anyplace but on a dirt court," said Joe Dimmett, a member of the Class of 1934.
"We played in the morning when the ground froze so it wouldn't be muddy. We'd scrape the snow off, sometimes" agreed Pat Scales' Class of 1929.
The Tennyson team, which ruled area basketball from 1929-32, played under the most basic conditions. But they made the conditions work to their advantage. And when they edged Lynnville 16-12 in the 1932 finals, it marked their fourth county championship in a row. The series of championship teams is even more surprising in view of the small classes at the school. Only 12 students graduated in the Class of 1930, and the number of graduates was down to seven by the Class of 1934.
"We were pretty proud of one of our nicknames when we were seniors. We were called the "point-a-minute' team," said Lee Jones, Class of 1929. Of course, the gymless wonders were not always great. But things seemed to fall into place around 1927, Jones said. "Sophomore year we went to the Evansville Sectional and hardly got a field goal. And then the next year we won every game but two," he said.
Of course, the Tennyson team's winning ways didn't happen completely by accident. Basketball was the main sport in those days, and the boys put all their efforts into the game, said Johnnie Garrison of the Class of 1931. "We grew up together and we played all the time. I don't think we were ever beaten in grade school," Garrison said.
It helped that there were few distractions to take their minds off the game. And the team members learned discipline from their chores around the farm.
"We didn't have television to look at. We didn't have radios," Dimmett recalled. "And before we went to school we had to help milk and feed the cows. Then we rode a horse to school," said Scales.
Another key to the team's discipline was their coach and principal, the late Abner Haas. All of the players credited Haas for their winning ways. There was a large running track around the outdoor court at Tennyson, and the coach put it to good use, the players said.
"We'd run around that thing, and you had to run until there weren't but one or two left standing," Dimmett laughed. And stamina was important to players on the Tennyson team. Because it took quite a bit of energy just to get to the game. "We were poor. We didn't have any bus travel," said Scales. "When we went to basketball games we'd ride in the back of a stock truck with tarpaulins over us. We'd wrap in quilts to keep warm."
And things weren't much better when they arrived at the game. "All of the gyms were heated with a potbelly stove," Jones said. "And some of the gyms had dirt floors. We'd get to playing the game with the stove going and it would melt the ground around the stove. And little streams of water would run across the basketball floor."
"And outside of Boonville there wasn't a dressing room in the county," laughed Scales. "We'd ride home in suits soaked with sweat." But the thrill of the game kept the team going, the players said. "We had great fans. We didn't have so many in Tennyson, because Tennyson was small. But we had Boonville and everybody pulling for us," Scales said.
Jones recalled that his father was always skeptical about basketball, and thought the game was a waste of time. "But after I got my car, I took him to a game or two and explained it to him. Then I couldn't get him to stay home."
Of course, the game has changed a bit since the days of the "gymless wonders." For example, in those days a jump ball followed every point scored. And there have been other changes, too.
"It was a lot faster. It was pretty rough, back then," said Dimmett, who recalled one especially tough contest against Cannelton. "I was a petty mean little rascal back then, and I'd roughed a few of them up," he said. So when Dimmett drove towards the basket, "they put their rumps together and their feet together, and my head hit the floor."
The result was three stitches, but no loss of enthusiasm.
The remaining team members will get a chance to rekindle that enthusiam next week, when Tennyson fields a team in the Old Timer's Tourney at Boonville High School.
The Tennyson team take on Chandler at 8:30 p.m. on Feb 5, and the "gymless wonders" said they plan to be on hand. "We'll be there. We're honorary members," said Dimmett. "I thought he said ornery member, didn't you?" laughed Garrison.
