Notes for ANDREW COVEL:
Notes by Teri Dimmett

I did many days of searching census records at ancestry- I've determined that there was only one Andrew (in the southern states), even though we've seen dates of birth, such as: the 1900 & 1930 has him b. 1831, the 1880 & 1910 has birth 1833 and in 1870 has him b. 1848. I wonder if he knew how to count, tell time, etc. He appears a different age each record. I checked all spellings of the surname and came up with only this one Andrew in the south.
Also, I'm not sure which woman is the mother of what children.

I believe that James & Sarah are the parents of John Henry Covel b. 6 Mar 1871 & George Washington Covel bc1864, here's why: In 1900, George & John are old enough to be out on their own. John was found with wife Lessie and children in 1900 census (see notes for John H. b1871). James & Sarah were married for 40 yrs in 1900, which puts their marriage date at 1860. I find it hard to believe that they had no children from 1860 when they were married, until the birth of Frony in 1873. I think John's birth at 1871 & George's at 1864 fit in here perfectly. Desperately seeking proof...
Further thoughts, I think, just like the date of birth & age differences, it's a case like Andrew's. This family seems correct to me, to the best of my ability, there are just NO other possibilities!

Birth year- 1817
Spouse- Elizabeth Turtle
Birth place- GA
Marriage year- 1843
Marriage place- OK

Buried at Park Hill Mission at the feet of the Rev. Samuel Worcester, as requested by Caleb. Caleb apparently died of consumption which he may have contracted from his first wife, Mary Elder, who was consumptive at the time of their marriage. The move to the south was hoped to improve her health. Mary, instead, died shortl y after the couple reached a mission station. He taught public school, first at Fourteen Mile Creek, and later at a mission school. When he was ill, his class was taken by his wife, Elizabeth. He also preached to the Cherokees. Most of the information about Caleb, both his wives and also his Cherokee in-laws, comes from letters and reports of the Rev. Elizur Butler. They were also mentioned on occasion in the Missionary Herald. (sent to me by unknown, I'm not sure what publication this is from).

From- The Indian Pioneer Papers:
Buried in the original Park Hill Graveyard, now often called the "Old Mission Graveyard" is Caleb Covel, who was born in 1817 and died at Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory 22 Sep 1850. The inscription on the Covel headstone says that he was from Boston, MA- which is erroneous, as he was a native of Portland, ME, according to the statement of his eldest daughter.
A member of a ship building family at Portland,Caleb Covel twice sailed around the world in his rather early lifetime. From China, he brought some beautiful china tableware, specimens of which are said yet to be in the possession of his descendants.
The frail constitution of Caleb Covel's young wife caused him to seek a milder climate, and he journeyed, with her to the Indian Territory.
At Park Hill, Caleb Covel met the Reverend Samuel A. Worcester, missionary to the Cherokee's, and in need of a teacher at the Dwight Mission of Sallisaw (Salaison) Creek, the young man was employed awhile in that capacity. The health of young Mrs Covel failed to improve and she died sometime after reaching the Cherokee Nation.
Caleb Covel eventually married again, his wife being Eliza Turtle, a full blood Cherokee girl who had attended Dwight Mission as a pupil. Caleb Covel, his second wife and their three small children, two daughters and a son, established their home at Tahlequah.
The Northeastern State Teacher's College is now situated on the site of the house in which once lived the Covel family. At a later period the same site was occupied, at least a portion was, by the home of James Hendricks, once a Judge of the Old Tahlequah District. When the Cherokee National Female Seminary was destroyed by fire at Park Hill in 1887, the Hendricks property was purchased by businessmen of Tahlequah and donated as the site of the new female seminary, now the main building of the college.
The health of Caleb Covel failed after a few years, and in 1850 he died at his home, at the border of the woodland which stretched away for miles northward and eastward. Present during the closing hours of Caleb Covel's life was the Reverend Walter A. Duncan, a young Methodist minister, afterward prominent in educational work in the Cherokee Nation. Those who sat beside the body of Caleb Covel were startled in the darkness of the night when a panther screamed in the outlying woodland.
Interment was made at Park Hill, the funeral services were conducted, so far as known, by Reverend's Samuel A. Worcester & Stephen Foreman. A well executed headstone of gray limestone was placed at the grave, the handiwork of John Watt, a Scottish stone mason, once well known in the Cherokee Nation. The grave of Caleb Covel is near that of Reverend Samuel A. Worcester.
Information from Mr S.W. Ross, as told to him by Mrs Mary Covel Holderman and Reverend Walter A. Duncan.

The following was sent by unknown, not sure from what particular publication.

Survived the Trail of Tears, along with her siblings. She was educated by the Rev. Elizur Butler, one of the two Presbyterian missionaries to the Cherokees (under the auspices of the Foreign Missions of the Congregational Church). Elizabeth was living in the home of the Rev. Samuel Worcester, Presbyterian missionary, at the time of her marriage, which was performed by the Rev. Dr. Worcester Information about Elizabeth is from the letters of the Rev . Dr. Butler and from the Miller application of her daughter, Mary. Her grave was moved at the time the dam was built and she is now buried in a small cemetery east of Salina, OK.

From- The Indian Pioneer Papers- It's Chiefs, Legislatures & Leading Men by HF & ES O'Beirne:

John Henry Covel was born 18 Jul 1848, close to the National Capital. He is the son of the late Caleb Covel of Massachusetts, who came to Park Hill with the Missionaries at an early date. His mother was Eliza Turtle, whose relatives were prominent in the Old State. "Henry" was sent by his mother to Illinois District to learn Cherokee (soon after the death of his father) and during a term of eight years, attended the neighborhood schools.
When the war broke out, he accompanied a party of Cherokee's going south, and traveled with them as far as Red River, where he joined the refugees. At the termination of the war, he went to Cane Hill College in Arkansas, but being left an orphan by the death of his mother in 1867, he was forced to shift for himself. Then followed a brief life on the cattle range, and a little experience in such hardships as ox-driving and so forth. At length, Henry was appointed school teacher in the Sequoyah District, and later on went to Coowescoowee District, where he taught three years. At the age of twenty-seven years, he married Lizzie Mayes, daughter of Wash Mayes (present High Sheriff) and neice to J.B. Mayes, principal Chief. Lizzie's mother is a sister to ex-Chief Bushyhead. By this union, Mr Covel has two children, Ella May and Jesse Crawford. Soon after his marriage, and quite unexpectedly, he was appointed First Assistant Teacher at the Cherokee Orphanage Asylum and taught there four years, after which he was elected Clerk of the Saline District for two years. At the expiration of the term, he was appointed Principal Teacher of the Orphan Asylum for four years, but resigned that position on the election of Joel B. Mayes to the Chieftancy of the Cherokee Nation in 1887. The Chief then appointed him as Executive Secretary, which office he held until November 1891, when he was re-appointed on the Chief's re-election. Mr Covel is the owner of two farms; one of seventy acres in the Saline District, and one of one hundred acres, close to the Capital. He also owns a small herd of cattle on Grand River, and a pleasant residence in Tahlequah.
Mr Covel is a self made man, and has no reason to be ashamed of the fact. Without parent's assistance since early boyhood, he has educated himself to become a good educator. He is affable in manner and pleasant in disposition, with a good stock of common sense as a basis to his book knowledge.
